The Wordy Shipmates — Sarah Vowell

It’s the feelgood Puritan history of the year!

But seriously, it is. Vowell is a regular contributor to This American Life and this book has a very similar voice. It’s conversational tone is very engaging, as is her use of current history and pop culture to make the trial of Anne Hutchinson even more interesting. As if Anne needed the help.

Vowell has a bit of tongue in cheek admiration for our Puritan ancestors, and certainly addresses the fact that most of our perceptions of their motivations and society come primarily from The Crucible and Thanksgiving related lore.

Quite a fun read, perhaps less so at Thanksgiving time.
